Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the attack made him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
