Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
